Four Disciplines of Execution 4DX

The 4 Disciplines of Execution are precise rules for translating strategy into action at all levels of an organization.  I believe that most of you would agree with me that it is easier to strategize than to implement the strategies formulated.  It is easier to make plans than to do the plans you created.  Am I correct?  It is just like New Year’s resolution, it is easy to make plans or strategies for your life but it is very hard to execute them.  Let me get to my point.  How many of you have dreamt of losing weight when you started 2013?  How many of you have actually lost weight?  Who among you have planned to read at least one good book in a month?  Who among you have actually read at least three books for now since it is already September?  Who among you have decided at the beginning of the year not to be late at work or appointments anymore?  Who among you are actually on time – with your going to office and meeting appointments with customers or clients?

This is why I want to share 4DX to you tonight.  When applied, the 4 Disciplines of Execution produce extraordinary results by tapping the desire to win that exists in every individual.  It’s a good book so if you have extra money buy it.  But here’s a brief summary: The first discipline of execution is…

The Discipline of FOCUS

If you want to become a great follower, you have to focus.  Say focus.Extraordinary results can only be achieved when you are clear about what matters most. As simple as this principle may sound, unfortunately, only few leaders have ever mastered it.

Let me tell you a story.  A New York stockbroker had just purchased a brand new Porsche. He parked it in front of his office to show it off to his colleagues. As he's getting out of the car, an SUV comes speeding along too close to the curb and takes off the door before driving off. The man gets very upset. He grabs his cell phone and calls the police. It takes them five minutes to show up.Before the officer has a chance to ask any questions the man starts to scream hysterically, "My Porsche, my beautiful silver Porsche is ruined. No matter how long it's at the body shop it'll simply never be the same again! When the man finally finishes his rant, the policeman shakes his head in disgust. "I can't believe how materialistic you are," he says. "You are so focused on your possessions that you don't notice anything else in your life.""How can you say such a thing at a time like this?" sobbed the Porsche owner. The policeman replied. "Didn't you realize that your left arm went with the door?"The stockbroker looked down in horror and screamed, "My Rolex!"

Enough of the joke, let’s go back to business.  The leader should narrow his focus. This is not only hard in the beginning, it’s hard to sustain because leaders are always drawn to new ideas. While innovation is important, without focus the team cannot succeed – so leaders must learn to say “no” or “not now” to new ideas until the results on the strategy have been achieved.

Focus on the Wildly Important requires you to go against your basic wiring as a leader and focus on less so that your team can achieve more. When you implement Discipline #1, you start by selecting one (or at the most, two) extremely important goals at work or in your company, instead of trying to significantly improve everything all at once. We call this a “Wildly Important Goal” (WIG) to make it clear to the team that this is the goal that matters most. Failure to achieve it will make every other accomplishment seem secondary - or possibly evenunimportant.

The same for us Christians, we should have “FOCUS.”  Don’t just focus on your earthly and work life; focus on God because our life here is just temporary.  Colossians 3:1 says, Therefore, if you have been raised with the Messiah, keep focusing on the things that are above, where the Messiah is seated at the right hand of God.” (ISV).  Others have time for Starbucks or for going out with friends or watch a movie after work.  But when you ask them to go to church or attend a cell group, they will say that they are already tired.  They have time for leisure but no time for God.

The Discipline of Leverage

Nowadays, restaurants often offer unlimited rice and bottomless drinks because Filipinos love it.  Who among you love to go to restaurants with unlimited rice or drinks?  Now, if given a chance by God, who among you would like to have unlimited time and resources? Wow, I also would love to have them.  With unlimited time and resources, we could accomplish anything. Unfortunately, our challenge is usually the opposite: accomplish more with less. We know that we only have 8 to 12 hours a day to work so don’t expect to have more than 24 hours a day to accomplish your work.  Don’t tell me that you don’t need to eat and sleep and spend time with your family.  If your capital in the business is limited, don’t make plans and apply loans that will give you future headaches.  Work out with what you have.  Save more money and use it in the business.  Check out with what you’re good at and use it as leverage.Leaders should find real leverage and how to use it to produce extraordinary results.

If your product is not so good yet, leverage on service.  Use it as a strategic weapon that requires the right attitude and superior discipline. Only organizations with a “service first” mentality can even hope to create a service advantage. If your quality is not so good yet as you’re still developing your product’s quality, leverage on price.  Look at China, we laugh at their quality but we keep on buying their products.  Am I correct?  Who among you here can say that you don’t have any China product at home?  I believe none of us will ever raise our hand here because we are definitely using China products one way or another.

Exodus 4:1-3 – “Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The Lord did not appear to you’?”  Then the Lord said to him, “What is that in your hand?”  “A staff,” he replied.  The Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.”  Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it.”  Moses here was tasked by God to free the Israeli from the slavery caused by the Egyptians.  But Moses said he can’t do it.  He had so many reasons so that God will not use him.  This is why God asked Moses what is in his hand.  Friends, what is in your hand right now?  How much money do you have as capital?  How much time do you have to accomplish your job?  What can you do with your skills or talents even if you think they are limited?  Don’t focuson what you don’t have.  Focus on what you have and I believe you can use it as your leverage or advantage.

The Discipline of Engagement

You have the authority to make things happen, but you want more than that – you want the performance that only passion and engagement can produce.  Leaders shouldshift from authority-driven compliance to passion-driven commitment in themselves and the people they lead.

The difference in performance between a team that simply understands their lead and lag measures as a concept, and a team that actually knows their score, is remarkable! Lead and lag measures that are not captured on a visual scoreboard and updated regularly, will surely disappear into the distraction of the whirlwind.

In any game, the players need to see the scoreboard to know how they are doing.  Am I right?  This is the same whether be at work or in your business.  You may be thinking that you already have a scoreboard, or even lots of scoreboards, all captured in complex spreadsheets inside your computer. This type of approach is tied to conventional thinking and is what we would call a “coach’s scoreboard.”

4DX Principle is different: The scoreboard is for the whole team. To drive execution you need a players’ scoreboard designed solely to engage all the players on your team to win…here’s where we need to be and here’s where we are right now. In five seconds or less, anyone can determine whether we are winning or losing. With this approach you will see an increase in the level of intensity of your team and you will also see teamwork. The fundamental purpose of a players’ scoreboard is to motivate the players to win.

4 Characteristics of a Compelling Players’ Scoreboard:
·         Is it simple? It must be simple. Coaches need the data to manage the game.  In basketball they have all sorts of info, like how many fouls, rebounds, steals, etc.  But the scoreboard on the field shows only the data needed by the players to play the game.
·         Can I see it easily? It must be visible to the team. Visibility drives accountability.
·         Does it show lead and lag measures? This really helps a scoreboard come to life.
·         Can I tell at a glance if I’m winning? If the team can’t quickly determine if they are winning or losing, then it’s not a game, it’s just data.

People play differently when they’re keeping score. If you doubt this, watch any group of teenagers playing basketball and see how the game changes the minute scorekeeping begins. But the truth of this statement is more clearly revealed by a change in emphasis: People play differently when they are keeping score. It’s not about you keeping score for them.

Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 5:11, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”  Use this compelling scoreboard to encourage one another.

The Discipline of Accountability

No matter how brilliant your plan or how important your goal, nothing will happen until you follow through with consistent action. In basketball, if you want to be a good shooter, you have to apply follow through.Ultimately, Discipline 4 is the most crucial, since it’s the discipline where the actual “game” is played. But remember, Discipline 4 can only happen because Disciplines 1 to 3 have set up a winnable game.

When accountability only exists between each team member and their boss, its effect is limited, but when team members feel accountable to each other, their performance shifts from being professional to personally important. Our experience has consistently shown that people will work hard to avoid disappointing their boss, but they will work harder to avoid disappointing their team. The result is a dramatically increased level of performance and follow-through.

CONCLUSION

There are two fundamental reasons that execution is so difficult. The first is that it requires people to change their behavior. Simply put, if you want to achieve goals you’ve never achieved before, you have to do things you’ve never done before. Changing human behavior is never easy, but it’s even harder because of the second challenge: implementing these changes in an environment that’s already swirling with urgent priorities – what we call the Whirlwind. Together, these challenges can derail even the best leaders from achieving their goals.

Do you remember the Law of Diminishing Returns? Basically, the more you try to do, the less you actually accomplish. This is an inescapable principle we all live with. Somewhere along the way, most leaders forget this. Why? Because smart, ambitious leaders don’t want to do less, they want to do more, even when they know better. Isn’t it really difficult for you to say “No” to a good idea, much less a great one? And yet, there will always be more good ideas than you and your teams have the capacity to execute. That’s why your first challenge is “focusing on the wildly important.”

Legalizing Divorce in the Phils., is Non-Beneficial!

Marriage is not merely a contract that binds between man and woman, instead a lifetime commitment. They both enter into marriage with high hopes and expectations that it will be a lifelong and mutually rewarding relationship. So it's not surprising that divorce is a painful experience not only on the couple but as well as their children. Families in a stable marriage tend to have a happier life and children are guided in the right way and become successful compared with those of divorced families, hence, legalizing divorce is non-beneficial.

Divorce is not a solution for any couple's  problem, instead it adds up the burden that needs an immediate action. It ruins the life of both parties. Stated by the noted marriage researchers Drs. Linda Waite and Maggie Gallagher, "Individuals who make the decision to divorce need to be well informed about its potential costs to themselves, to their partners, and to their children. They must be reminded of the long term investment they have when they engage into marriage." They become more brittle and easy to break for feeling of failure, purposelessness, and depression sink into their senses. Divorced women are generally less happy compared to men for they do not know what to do and say to make social contacts for these people distance themselves for they do not know what to do and say to make the divorced individual feel better. Worst, they found divorced people as a threat to the stability of theri own marriage. Some divorced women and men engaged in casual sex to find the closeness and intimacy they are longing for. At the end of the day, divorced individual seems to set in motion a process in which they end up losing everything.

We, Filipinos, value family ties but divorce terminates this bond making children as the most affected member of the family. They have greater possibility of having behavioral problems, likely to leave school and home when young and become sexually active forming a cohabiting partnership, become pregnant and parent at an early age without the benefit of marriage. They tend to be more depressed and have higher level of engagement in drinking, smoking, and using addictive drugs during adolesence. Undoubtedly, divorce brings lot of different changes in a child's life, like confusion, denial, feal which can lead to aggression, anger and depression and even suicidal thoughts and panic attacks.

Finally, divorce can be abused by people for it allows marriage to be easily disconnected. Proposing another bill would be costly and may cause disturbance to the total budget allocation of the government. In fact, annulment is already available in our country. Instead of giving emphasis with this, the government may use the time and funds for a more productive services like but not limited to the Department of Health and DepEd.

Divorce by any definition is a horrible word. There's no way to make the word sounds better or make its effect less painful. Webster's dictionary defined divorce as a legal dissolution of marriage or termination of an existing relationship or union. The definition made the word formal and does not accurately display the feeling that sweeps over a person. A better definition of the depth of the word comes from Whitney, holding a child's point of view saying, "Divorce is like a thousand knives being thrown at one's heart or a slow painful ride through a Horror Mountain." To them, divorce is more just a legal dissolution; it is their whole world being torn apart and thrown on the ground in pieces.

And now, I'm leaving you a question to ponder about, "Do you want to live a life with a broken family?"

"Who Am I?" ( A personal reflection)

“WHO AM I”
(Personal Reflections)

Life is full of choices and each one of us has ROLES to play. We tend to believe that what we are now are really we are, but all we showed are for the expectations of other people, pretending to be good, tough, kind etc., but in reality we are not. As I go along with my reflections and tried to go deeper with the question WHO AM I, I found out that I played so many ROLES.  Do I really know myself? Am I really this kind of person? What kind of MASK am I wearing? Because of these questions, I was able to know more about myself. This has been the answers:
I am kind, a bit emotional, sensitive, hardworking, honest, friendly and most of all God-fearing but hot tempered, stubborn and full of resentment. A product of a broken family, my parents separated when I was eleven years old and was able to finish my studies at my own expense from high school to college. Right after college I got married at my own expense and blessed with four children. Currently, I’ve got two full-time jobs, as a Venue Manager from Club Ultima Phils., and College Faculty from University of Cebu- LM. Having two jobs in a different environment made me feel extra ordinary. I used to have double job way back in my college ,  working as an Accounting Staff in the morning and as a Service Crew in KFC from 5:00 o’clock in the afternoon to close. Despite my hectic schedule I see to it that I can attend and participate MASS everyday and that’s already part of my routine. Being successful for me is a choice not by luck. I have lots of resentment to my father and I thought I already overcome it because of my relationship to my God but I realized that it was not fully given up.   I don’t believe in excuses, it’s a matter of time management and prioritizing things. People were looking at me as a tough man, but I’m not, that’s exactly opposite of me, very sensitive and emotional person. But then again, I was portraying such kind of role which really required in the kind of job that I have . I want everything to be in-placed and organized, that poverty is not a hindrance to be successful. Life is not a bed of roses such that everyone should strive hard in order to survive. Life is too short, every day we lived we should live it to the fullest and of course with the consideration of people that surrounds  us.

I also realized that more than anyone else, I should be true to myself that one day I will be facing to my God and will be responsible to all my doings.  I know and I do believed that every human should be treated equal no matter what status in life, since God treated us equally, that there is no poor or rich, everyone is fair. Trials, difficulties and problems are God’s way of testing our faith and testing our strength.

The Betrayal

From the gospel of Matthew 26: 14-25

One of the twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priest and said, " What are you willing to give me if I hand Jesus over to you?" They paid him thirty pieces of silver, and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over.

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus and said, "Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?" He said, " Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, The  teacher says, " My appointed time draws near; in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples." The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered, and prepared the Passover.

When it was evening, he reclined at table with the twelve. And while they were eating, he said, "Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me." Deeply distressed at this, they began to say to him one after another, "Surely it is not I, Lord?" He said in reply, "He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me is the one who will betray me. The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born." Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply, "Surely it is not I, Rabbi?" He answered, "You have said so."

Reflections:

Judas betrays the Lord by selling him for thirty pieces of silver, the price of a slave! But others, and we very likely, have also exchanged the Lord in our lives perhaps for a paltry sum of money, or a moment of pleasure, or dishonest profit in business, or a chance to get ahead of the competition in the office. The Lord has been sold countless times and in countless ways by those who claimed to be his followers. How many among us today are guilty for these. How many times in our life today that we exchange Sunday Mass for personal matters and perhaps enjoyment and works. How many among us today is next to Judas Iscariot?

We must cleanse our memories and our lives of our many acts of betrayal by expressing sorrow for our sins and making reparation for our offenses. Remember, it's not only Judas who betrayed Jesus, even in our recent times we have betrayed him several times.

Lord Jesus, have mercy on us for betraying you.

Congratulations Graduate Batch 2013

Surely, it was your dreamed four years ago when you enter the portals of your Alma Mater  to finish your chosen course, and finally today, your Ring Hop and Graduation Ball is one of the memorable celebration to reckon with.

The smiles, the excitements and Joys are a few of those mixed emotions that you were chasing right now. But remember, it’s not the end of your journey towards success, it was just part of the preparation in facing  the real world after graduation. The reality that,  failures and successes are certain to happen. My dear graduates, allow me to share to you my favorite quotes from my favorite author Zig Ziglar that, “ Failure is an event not a person, while SUCCESS is the doing, not the getting; it is the trying not the triumph”. Success is a personal standard, reaching for the highest that is in us, becoming all that we can be. If we do our best, we are a success. But the most important persuasion tool in life is Integrity. You could have the ability that can take you to the top, but it takes attitudes to keep you there. It was our Attitude that got us out of bed, commitment that moved us into action and discipline that enabled us to follow through. It is not our APTITUDE ,  but our ATTITUDE that decides our ALTITUDE in life. Whatever failures that come into your way, just remember that you don’t drown by falling into the water, you only drown if you stay there.

With all the learning, trials and accomplishments you have during your stay in your college days, undoubtedly, you can face the real world.

Once again, congratulations for a job well done!

Leader..... Born or Made

What is it to become a leader? Or How to become a leader? This are the most common question to all people who aims to be on top of others...

Well, everybody thinks they are a leader but most are far from it. The harsh reality is that we live in a world with wannable leaders. As much as some don't want to admit it, not everyone can or should become a leader. Simply desiring to be a leader doesn't mean a person has the character, skill and courage necessary to be a leader.

Several times I was being asked of what it takes to be on top, was I a born leader or did I make it to be a leader? My answer is, a leader is born and made. There are inherent characters and talents coming from our parents yet it was not nourished and developed, however some where able to discover it at the early stage and that prompts them to pursue it, trying to find and do things that will enhance through education and experience. Leadership is learned behavior that becomes unconscious and automatic over time. Many people wonder how leaders know how to make the best decisions, often under immense pressure. The process of making these decisions come from an accumulation of experiences and encounters with a multitude of different circumstances, personality types and unforseen failures.

But a question like how could a  leader makes a sound and wise decision? A good leader could make a sound and wise decisions when he decides according to these two RIGHTS! So what are these two rights mean?
          1. RIGHT - being in accordance with what is just, good or proper. ( being upright and righteous)
          2. RIGHT - are legal, social or ethical principles of freedom or entitlement. ( it shows ownership)

A good question to start with in making decision is asking himself like; Am I doing these because this is my right? Or am I doing these because this is right? If both are being answered by YES, then a leader makes a sound and wise decision. But it doesn't stop there, in fact I never cease to be amazed at the number of people in leadership positions that shouldn't be there. Likewise, I've stopped being surprised when those charged with leadership development can't seem to figure out what constitutes a leader. A good leader should possess the following characteristics:
     1. Leaders should perform - they should get the job done and consistently exceed expectations.
     2. Leaders should always care - indifference is a characteristics that should not be suited in a leader
    3. Leaders should not take credit instead give it - he should always use the word WE when referring to success and I when accepting responsibilities and failures.
     4. Should care more about the people not on the process - people are not machine they are human so that they will be treated as human.
          5. Leaders should always look at the higher purpose not chasing on the position - value more on the service not on self - interest.

Therefore, LEADERS are born and at the same time made. Unless, you possess at least those qualities and characteristics mention, then you are not a leader.

Ash Wednesday... Almsgiving, Prayer, & Fasting.

How does anyone mean about Ash Wednesday?

Is it about fasting? Is it about religion? Is it about pretending to be a God fearing? Is it about sacrificing?  Well, maybe one could have a good answer about Ash wednesday by reading the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 6:1-6, 16-18 to wit;

Jesus said to his disciples, "Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly father. When you give Alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hyprocites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give Alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And your father who sees in secret will repay you.

"When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand ad pray in the synagogues and on steet corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door and pray to your father in secret. And your father who sees in secret will repay you.

When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you may not appear to be fasting, except to your father who is hidden. And your father who sees what is hidden will repay you."

End of verse.....

Reflections:

ALMSGIVING, PRAYER, FASTING. these are the three traditional acts of piety that we are urged to perform as we enter the Lenten season. These practices are truly religious acts, i,e., they draw us closer to God only if they are done for God's glory. But these acts also present us with a great temptation to seek our own glory isntead of God's. Thus, we must remember to do these things "for God's  eyes only."

To seek to draw attention to ourselves when we give allms, pray or fast is to devalue those actions. To do them in order to earn praise from people is to lose the reward that matters, from God.

LENT SEASON:
L - let us
E - eliminate all
N - negative
T - thoughts and talks.

Friend, fake or real? take your pick......

"A single hand that wipes your tears is better than the thousand hands who clap at your success. For in your darkest and lowest moment, you'll never be left alone by those who are real to you".

Not all people that sorrounds you whom you considered as friends are real, they might be around during your times of glory, they normally joins your success, happy for your achievements, they will run in a hurry extending their hands saying congratulations for a job well done, yelling their support when you almost reach your star! But are these same people who will comfort and stay by your side  when times get rough and tough?  Are these same people will journey with you when you feel that the road seems no endless where you can see but nothing is darkness? Are these same people will offer their shoulder for you to lean on and offer their hands for you to reach out?  Or are these same people who turn their backs on you when you feel like you want to cry!

Be skeptic and be careful, you might be frustrated at the end. Those people who joins your success, happy for your achievements, shows their support and yelling their cheers were the last person to find when you are in deep trouble and in need. Treasure the first person who wipes your tears and remains on your side through    thick and thin for they are real and genuine friend,   surely they will never leave  and will stay with you till the end. So don't be afraid with your enemy for you will expect them to attack you, but instead be afraid with those fake friends that will hug and kiss you for they will attack behind your back.

Birthday Message from CCYM

          My 39th birthday was almost a long week celebration, it's not because of the parties and gifts, but rather the messages and greetings from my friends and students. One of the message that really touched my heart and moved me to tears is the message coming from the CCYM who's message was created using my name Mr. JHUN L. VERIL to wit;

M-----most memorable moment that a person can think is when God has constructed the line for us; it is the course which is the emblem of being a person living in this perfect world, emblem of which we call life. It was that moment when we became another witness of the world as the best masterpiece of God made for us. We first saw a glimpse of the world along with the first time when we took our first air into our young lungs until the glimpse grows into verification of the reality.

R-----remembering those times again and again, we normally celebrate the yearly event as  a grateful day of celebrating the memorial  of the greatest blessing which we refer as "BIRTHDAY"

J-----just remembered a person of a real professional in sight  and in the way he is. If you could just describe him as a well attired, with good postured standing, with a neat complexion and a formally wet look styled hair, you would have decided to put yourself a kilometer of gap from his place.

H-----humble he is, that would lessen the gap you preset for him, though you will feel uneasy of his presence, he will always approach somebody like you're just in the same shoes. He is looking up on you even he is in a higher place and not allowing you to look up to his high altitude proving that comfort is felt if he is around.

U-----under his shirt, he is not hiding a word or a pinch of disguise. So any unreasonable consideration is not on the queue of his thought. An offense is naturally corrected through his mind and personality twisting disciplinary words, a father in a sense.

N-----not dented personality he really has a full of disciplinary words not only for the physical but also for the emotional and spiritual maturity. His knowledge shared was a lift for the weary soul, so hungry for the spiritual food. Crater of the heart is filled with sands of hope added through the spoken light.

L-----lear that I absorbed root my heart, deep through it is a hook tip of assurance that no one can steal it away from me, nor take it away from me. for my heart was ones an arid but still moist when he taught me of the tips of a good life through a steadfast faith like Job had.

V-----vulnerable is a person with less faith, how much more if one has none. But definitely, this person I refer surely is never penetrated by those gigantic punches of the world for he is holding onto the most reliable security, the faith to God. He is the person whose faith always ablaze that no impediment can blow it off and its radiation ignites another soul's, leading to sparkling of light whose radiance makes a vivid pathway making assurance that gnashing of the teeth will not be at the end.

E-----every day his routine is always including the propagation of the spiritual life which we are inspired to do also. He is a person whom is not willing to give even a strand of the hair drown to the darkness. And as a person belonged the young and inexperienced generation, we are mirroring his good deeds and examples.

R-----right, I am referring to a person, no other than our adviser of the Catholic Charismatic Youth Movement (CCYM), M.R. J.H.U.N.  L.  V.E.R.I.L. Worthy he is to be in the said office for as we journey towards the tomorrow which they call future, he is our reflection and guide to be molded as a good Christian and also to be worthy for the title as one of the greatest creation of God.

I-----I am the community and the family myself, which was guided by this man. Life is too short

Death is like a theft in the night, it will come to you without any warning. My  nephew ( son of my first cousin) is supposed to celebrate  his birthday tomorrow but unfortunately he passed away yesterday. It's very painful since he died not on a natural death but a very tragic death. He went to his father  (who abandoned them when he was still 10 years old) riding his motorbike to ask for something for his birthday, but his motorbike bumped to a ten wheeler truck and his body was rolled over by the wheels that caused his sudden death. Despite those odds in life, he was able to finish his college education in his own support and at the same time provides everything  for his three younger sibblings since both parents abandoned them at an early age. No grandparents dared to support them, nor took good care of them. He grew up with bitterness in his heart, knowing that his half brothers and sisters were leaving in a comfortable lives with the full support of his parents and  grandparents. A very responsible, kind, polite and courteous nephew doesn't deserve to die such a tragic and painful death. A man with humble wish, with so much positive outlook in life and dreams to achieve will forever vanish. You will always remain in my thoughts and in my prayer.

Now that you will be back in the hands of our creator, surely you will have the eternal happiness. May you rest in peace!

The Great Light in Darkness

The Gospel from Mt. 4:12-17, 23-25

When he heard that John had been arrested, Jesus withdrew to Galilee. He left nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled: Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death, light has arisen.

He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people. His fame spread to all of Syria, and they brought to him all who were sick with various diseases and racked with pain, those who were possessed, lunatics and paralytics, and he cured them. And great crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan followed him.

Reflections:

In our individual lives and in our history, we have all experienced how our dark moments are illuminated when a person of the hour comes along. In the Philippines, after the murder of Ninoy Aquino, the country was plunged in great darkness, but when Cory Aquino announced her candidacy, the light of new hope shone on the country, culminating in our famous EDSA peaceful people power revolution.

In the absense of light, there is darkness. Every individual might be suffering from pains, trials and problems but GOD himself showed us that when darkness comes,  great light will follow. See, we experienced everyday the great light during daytime and darkness during night time. That's how magnificent GOD is, if you are experiencing darkness now, surely great light comes after.

The coming of Jesus into the scene when he stays in Capernaum casts an even greater light of hope on people who have been sitting in darkness and dwelling in a land overshadowed by death. Jesus brings light by his person and by his ministry of teaching, proclaiming the gospel and healing.

Ever since I was young I've learned to stand,  live , decide , work and finished a degree and obtain post graduate studies by my own. Don't have a father to run in times of trouble, no brother or sister to comfort when times get rough and tough, and also longing for a mother's care. I faced it all by myself with courage, faith and dedication that made me become stronger and  able to reach higher level in my career.

Life has its ups and downs, and that reminds me how I started my life, it was much of great difficulties and struggles! There was a point that I started asking myself and my God why , but answers were found as I go along with my journey! Today, I tried to look back and said, had I quitted will I be the person that I am now! Now am living my life easier compared to others and enjoying the fruits of my labor! Days from now I will be celebrating my natal day and thanks to my God that he extended my life not for my own used but for others.
